TEENS
Technology opens up a new world of opportunity for this generation of teens. Technology allows teens to interact with their favorite celebrity or sports team via social media, play video games with someone across the world, and apply for college – all in the comfort of their own home.
• More than half (51.6%) of the teens surveyed said the Internet has changed the way they spend their free time.
• More than 90% use a computer either at home or at school
• More than half (55%) of youth in America ages 12-17 use an online social networking site.
However, technology can open up a scary, dark world to teens…
• 50% of teens (ages 13-18) frequently communicate online with someone they’ve never met in person
• 42% say they’ve posted information about themselves on the Internet so others may contact them
• 30% have talked about meeting someone they have only met through the internet
• 37% have received a link to sexually explicit content
• 11% were solicited online by adults and kept the incident from their parents
… In an age where every cell phone is a computer with Internet access, there are no “parental controls” that can fully protect teens from danger. In this cyber age, the old parental warnings “not to take candy from strangers” or get into a stranger’s car have limited effect, especially when danger can enter directly into your teen’s bedroom via an Internet connection. Teens have no problem enjoying technology and all its benefits – and parents should encourage that. However, parents should teach their teens not only to be responsible and alert in the world but also online as well.
